From industrial heritage to an immersive event space
Births, Deaths and Marriages
The Pyrmont Registry is the new workplace and wedding venue for the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages.
It has relocated from Chippendale to Wharf 10, the building cleverly adapted as a dual-purpose space for both Department staff and the public.
The waterfront setting provides amenity to its staff and the community who visit during significant life milestones. The interior design positions water as a focal point, celebrating its eternal and transformative nature.
Clever planning in the wharf building delineates north and south zones. The department workplace is in the north end, while the south houses the wedding venue spaces.
The arrival experience is ceremonial; visitors are immersed in a tranquil space defined by three materials. Soft textiles drape from the ceiling to suggest the rhythmic motion of water. Muted timbers complement the concrete shell of the wharf’s architecture.
This mesmerising materiality continues down the corridor with a strong sense of procession. Beyond, two ceremony rooms accommodate wedding parties of 30 people or can combine for larger weddings. Full-height glazing maintains views out to the surrounding harbour.
The calm simplicity of the Registry ensures people are foregrounded during their special moments.
