Bates Smart exhibiting as part of House Show at Walsh Street
We are excited to share that our speculative vision for Melbourne’s Net Zero Future will be exhibiting as part of House Show 15.02 – 23.02.2025 at Walsh Street!
Celebrating 20 years of the Robin Boyd Foundation’s custodianship of Walsh Street, House Show brings together architects, designers and artists for an exhibition that diffuses process and discourse throughout the residence.
Melbourne’s Net Zero Future
In 2023, Melbourne secured the status of Australia’s most populous city. As growth projections continue to trend upwards, the necessity to cultivate higher density becomes evident – a response to demands of work, living, and leisure. Australia’s commitment to curb carbon emissions by 43% by 2030, and pursue net-zero emissions by 2050, remains unwavering. Noteworthy is the built environment’s contribution of almost 40% to global carbon emissions, with concrete alone responsible for nearly 10%. To reach net-zero by 2050 we need to gradually construct 30% of our buildings in mass timber, meaning we only need to increase timber construction by 1% each year between now and 2050. The aftermath of Covid-19 has resulted in vacant B&C grade office buildings due to evolving tenant preferences. To combat this, mass timber extensions emerge as a sustainable solution, providing vital extra floor space and repurposing these structures for a more environmentally conscious future.
